Martell Collins
Martell Collins is an award-winning urban producer, community organizer, educator, and Executive Director of Wood St. Collective. With 10+ years of experience at Englewood nonprofit organizations, Collins works on the basis that a person’s reputation arrives before the person. His vision for food access on the South Side is uncompromising, and he fomented partnerships with the City of Chicago’s Food Equity Council, Planning Department, several Mayoral administrations, and the 16th Ward to establish Wood St. Collective’s half-acre urban farm.
"My name is Martell Collins. My family and I have been a part of the Englewood Community for about 29 years. I, alongside my Director of Operations Nate Haefelin, started Wood St Collective years ago as two teens who were ambitious about a cool cultural shift within my neighborhood using agriculture farming. Being a vessel of the community through the nonprofit work and practices, I was blessed with various opportunities to pilot events or partner with organizations that empower urban neighborhoods who are underserved or lack resources. Through these experiences, I identified barriers that held back Chicago communities and, so that we may all overcome them, sought to develop the skills and tools to support Black and Latinx families. There’s a lot of great things happening around the City of Chicago, and every year we bring more people into our mission entrepreneurs, community advocates, activists, church leaders, youth center counselors, principals, teachers, students, and other stakeholders, . WOOD ST. COLLECTIVE is here to promote and push a healthier livelihood because 'Health is Wealth.'" Martell Collins, Executive Director |
